Saturday at La Bonne Etoile in France (05/18/08)

Saturday at La Bonne Etoile in France
We took our time on Saturday, finally venturing forth around 5pm to go to a neighboring village, Sergene, home of the rowdy spring parade where the village grows from 1500 to 4000 and everyone in the village is in the parade, complete with floats. To make the fun last, they go around the route 3 times.
Anyway, there was an art exhibit opening, 2-d and sculpture. 40 or 50 people were there. Even the local dignataries. We missed the speeches. The French really dress up and support the arts! Chantal, Kippy and Jerome are friends with John-Mark who is a prolific sculptor who does wonderful pieces with wood and metal.
He invited us to see his new home...has to be 150 years old. Hadn't been lived in for 10 years. a barn had fallen down, and in the process of salvaging the materials and clearing the land, John-Paul discovered a series of caves carved out of the bedrock. He has gotten so fascinated with the caves that he has not been working on the house. Plans to turn the larger one into a studio. These village houses are like buying an unfinished house at home...no kitchen, barely a bathroom, and years of DIY projects...some not done very well. So, though the price is great by our standards, it takes much moolah to clean them out, retain the charm, and reconfigure. But when they are finished...ooh-la-la (as Chantal says)!
The clouds were the scenery on the drive over. the church was from the drive back. Not too shabby for local views, huh?
